What could be done about grease spots showing up 2 weeks after plastering ceiling?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.37 PM

Just had someone out to assess a kitchen ceiling repaired and plastered after a leak. Apparently the brown marks on the ceiling are grease spots which indicates the plasterer did not clean the ceiling. He stated I should get the contractor back to skim the ceiling again, otherwise the paint is LIKELY to flake and peel. Is this accurate? EDIT: Tim, Thanks for responding. I don’t know how to respond on the thread after posting a question. Regarding your statement “ Abrade these shiny patches, fill over lightly with toupret ready mixed fine surface filler, sand smooth and level, mist and paint” The patches are not shiny, they are brown, some smooth some not. How long does one need to leave the filler to dry before sanding, please? Is that the plasterers job, or the painters job? Also how long between misting and painting? I am learning all this new jargon and still feeling lost.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No. Likely to be areas that were overworked in the final trowel stages. Plastering these days seems such a mixed bag in terms of quality of finish. Im starting a job monday, a very large living room, skimmed by one plasterer doing his own mixing and labouring, its dried 100% matt pink with no dust on the surface, if only all jobs were like that. But i digress. Abrade these shiny patches, fill over lightly with toupret ready mixed fine surface filler, sand smooth and level, mist and paint. Edit. Difficult to say exactly what the patches are. Possibly a stain of some sort, so use a stainblocker e.g zinnser b.i.n Filler, when fully white. Mist coat minimum 4 hours in perfect conditions. Often better to leave till the next day

If it's grease spots, just Zinsser BIN and repaint.

I would say it’s more likely a leak from a pipe above the ceiling, if there is a bathroom above the area then it most definitely is. Once the leak is detected and fixed then applying an oil base undercoat then emulsion on top will stop the stain from reappearing.
