Should plasterboard be replaced and does extractor fan need to come out first?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.37 PM

After a leak from the flat above, the plasterboard near the window bulged yet the paint was intact on it(!) It was dried out by dehumidifier over 2 weeks and then simply plastered over leaving an uneven bumpy finish. After 2 weeks drying out its magically not as bumpy which is odd as clearly the green membrane had bulged. Is that normal? I asked the contractor to redo the wall with a similar moisture resistant plasterboard as we do a lot of cooking and ventilation isn’t great. He said he would do that but would not remove the extractor fan to fit the plasterboard. That means he would have to cut around the existing plasterboard on which the extractor fan sits, is that okay? I’m just a girl but it’s four screws to remove the extractor fan! Also, do they need to plaster the moisture resistant plasterboard before painting? If so how long should it be left to dry? Thanks for bearing with my questions x

Plasterboard once wet and bulging wont recover. Its usually better, quicker and cheaper to just cut a section out and replace it and then re-skim. Once the plaster is totally dry it can be painted. I agree removing the extractor or bezel may be quickest way. Some tradesman will not do this as they have not had electrical training. they my be able to cut the old plasterboard out without removing it and slot a new piece behind. Plasterboard takes on average 2-3 days to dry when plastered, whereas backing plaster takes 4-6 days. No matter what material you have used, it is advisable to wait at least a week before painting new plaster. If its not fully dry the paint won't bond properly and will peel or flake later.

Were ever there as been a leak from penetration of water you need to turn of power take the extractor fan of the wall cut out the plasterboard otherwise wise the board will sack and bow and will take ages to dry out. Normally with plasterboard I plaster over but you can tape and scrim the joints only.

Its not absolutely lclear what y ou propose but idealy remove the plasterboard first with the extractor. Skim the boards and replace the extrsctor. Drying out time is easy to see.1/2 days at most. Then you can paint.
