Electric heating makes loud banging noise at least once when in use. Is this normal?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.37 PM

I'm in a small studio with a heater that's entirely electric, no water involved. I presume it's a convector heater. Anyway, as the title states it makes a loud banging noise when in use, is this normal or something I need to worry about? I can't find any useful info online. The heater brand is hyco if that helps.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Is it making the sound when first turning it on, and shortly after turning it off? If so, it sounds like expansion and contraction noises. Without hearing it myself it’s hard to say... Regards, Carl.

Hi there, Carl is correct, this is almost certainly caused due to expansion and contraction of the metal casing. Once the surface materials expand this creates tension, and when it releases this creates a clicking noise. Despite the fact this is almost always going to happen, the problem can be exaggerated by a poorly mounted fixing bracket, or grub screws which have not been sufficiently tightened, both of which are designed to counteract this torsion. Your best bet is to remove the heater from the mounting bracket, ONCE COOLED, and place it on the floor if you are able to do so. Turn it on and see if the issue subsides. If it does not then there could be an issue with the thermostat, however this should not make such a loud sound regardless. If the issue persists then a new heater it is and you should make sure it is it fitted properly! Hope this helps. Steve Alta Electrical Services Ltd
