Edge/trim for bay window roof - suggestions

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.37 PM

Hi We have just had our bay window roof repaired, it was leaking. Original Victorian roof was removed long ago (would have had no visible roof, I think, and a small down pipe coming out of the stone work for drainage). Last 10+ years, its had a flat fibre-glass roof, guttering around the top edge and a drainpipe. This was leaking, so builder has today re-roofed it (using some very thick rubber material) but my concern is the trim he has added around the edge. It is a black shiny plastic trim, with lots of plastic covered screws, and does not look like anything else on the street, and way too modern for our old house. The guttering does cover it a bit of course, but it is still visible and I was much happier with the appearance of the fibre-glass, which was grey and looked like lead. I'm looking for any suggestion of what the builder could replace the black plastic trim with? Is there such a thing as a lead trim? Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There’s nothing that can be done to replace it, the trim is needed for the manufacturers guarantee to secure the EDPM in place on the edges from wind up lift. This is why I personally always give a detailed itemised quotation listing materials & brand of materials so the customer has a chance to do there research and really understand what they are getting and what the finished product might look like. The trim is UPVC and over time it won’t be as shinny but this will take a good 5 years many longer, you could try to paint it a matt colour but this would be uncharted territory as I don’t think anybody has ever attempted to paint UPVC plastics before or not that I know of. Otherwise you if you really don’t like the look of the roof rip it up and start over. Regards Frankie BT Roofing Services

Trims come in a multitude of colours, eg anthracite grey. However maybe you should have stayed with a grp roof for appearances.

You Could consider painting it lead colour, cromapol perhaps, be cheaper than re roofing
