Removal of Main fuse box

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.36 PM

Should a main fuse box which is before the consumer unit at any time be removed completely from the circuit? If it is removed, is it a H&S issue Thanks Shaun

Hi Shaun, Working with electricity is ALWAYS a H&S issue. What do you mean by removal of main fuse box before consumer unit? Are you referring to the service head and pulling the main fuse? If so, the normal path would be to have a two or four pole isolator fitted by your DNO prior to starting the CCU removal, so that it can be done safely by isolating the supply and locking it off, and then carrying out the tests to prove dead using GS38 compliant equipment. I wouldn’t try this yourself, you’d be breaking a few laws and you may even suffer an electric shock resulting in serious injury or death. Regards, Carl.

Sorry, but your question needs clarifying. The order of equipment in the chain is cut-out, electricity meter then consumer unit. Is there another device between the CU and the meter?

You should have a main cut out fuse with live and neutral going to a meter and earth going to the fusebox or an Earth terminal. You should then have the live and neutral from the meter going to the fusebox. If the meter or the cut out is missing something is wrong or it is not the supply. If you have a fusebox with a sub board being fed from it the first can be removed but must be done correctly. Get an electrician to investigate.
