Bricklaying & Repointing

Sealing a doorway in a load-bearing wall

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.36 PM

Dear all, I was wondering if you can help? I have a single door opening in a solid internal wall that separates the kitchen from the bathroom. However, I would like to conceal this door opening in a way that reinforces the wall that accommodated the door opening in the first place. I have been advised to use heavy duty bricks or concrete blocks for the purpose. I am inclined towards bricks as they look nicer and more sound proof. My question is what would you recommend, bricks or concrete blocks? As the new wall petition will be reinforcing the old wall, will I need to excavate the old door opening threshold area for the reinforcing wall foundations? Cheers.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Bricks and 7n concrete blocks are equally resistant to the passage of sound. Bricks are more expensive to buy and lay. If it's being lined and plastered, then there is no real argument for using bricks. The old foundations probably run under the doorway, find them and build on top, with a DPC.
