Why did a second coat of tile paint leave a frosted finish?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.36 PM

Hi, I used Johnstone's Revive Tile paint in pale grey in my kitchen, which is mainly tiled floor to ceiling, and the first coat left a lovely glossy finish. After 7 days I gave it another coat and now the finish looks completely different. Some of of the tiles have a frosted finish and it looks more satin than gloss. It didn't say one coat only on the tin. Should I leave it a few weeks and give it a third coat or lightly sand them? Although someone said sanding might scratch the tiles. I really wish I'd left it at one coat now. I'd really appreciate some advice. Thanks Yes, thanks, my partner did use a roller and I asked him after the second coat did he stir the paint? He said he didn't stir the tin, he shaked it. Could this be the problem even though it came out okay on the first coat? He also cut it in with a brush first. Thanks for the help.

I had a look at the data sheets from Johnstones and it states that the product shouldn't be applied in damp conditions or temperatures below 10°. Normally if a gloss paint has gone flat its usually due to the fact its been applied on a damp surface or damp conditions. This weather isn't the best at the moment and although it may appear dry indoors there is a lot of moisture which could be a factor. No harm giving the tiles a light rub with wet and dry sandpaper and another coat. Be sure to give the surfaces a quick wipe with sugar soap prior to application.

Usually to get a perfect Finnish, you would apply a non porous paint like zinsser primer then your 1-2 coat tiles paint depending on your first or second top coat 👍

I would use a really light sandpaper warn. Lightly sand the full surface making sure there are no dust or dirt left in the surface. Then reapply paint making sure the area is ventilated and not to cold to let it dry. Also use a gloss roller to apply the paint.
