Hair line cracks in stairwell and some windows. What can I do?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

Moved into property six months ago, the house is 1950s, ex RAF. it was all freshly painted. The only work we have had done is put curtain poles up in some of the rooms, There are now some small cracks, which seem to be growing in length around some windows on the ground floor, stairwell and in one bedroom on opposite side of the house. I am very worried that this is a significant problem - is there anything I can do to ensure my house is safe and still standing and make it look nicer!? Any advice would be very helpful.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Its probably shrinkage cracks, rake the cracks out and fill with a flexible filler sand down and re paint

Houses are always moving although usually not so noticeably usually due to thermal expansion. New house design allows for this movement by inserting expansion joints in certain places. It is very unlikely that the design of a 1950's house would incorporate such design. You should worry if doors or windows don't open or close properly. Or if the cracks continue through to the outside of the property. There are flexible paints on the market that help in masking cracks but I'd suggest hanging some nice pictures to take the eye off the cracks One way of looking at it is that the house has stood for sixty odd years and I'm sure it will stand for another sixty.
