twist pop-up bath plug problem

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.37 PM

Hi there, The twist mechanism that works my pop-up Bath plug has stopped working - it no longer lifts the bath plug up out of the bath. I’ve read online that I should be able to take the circular twist mechanism cover off by unscrewing the screw holding it in place, but the screw in mine looks like it’s corroded so there’s no screw head left to turn! Could anyone advise on how else I could get the cover off so that I can try to mend the mechanism underneath? And is this something I can attempt myself? - I’m definitely not a plumber! Thanks!

Take the plug out using a glass suction cup (such as on the back of a washing up brush or car phone holder). Check the adjuster screw on the bottom of the plug is wound out enough, and that the lifter inside the plug is not stuck or impeded. If you find broken parts it's easiest to replace the whole bath waste. Alternatively you could try and buy an old style rubber bath plug on a chain, if your on a tight budget.

Unfortunately this is a common problem with these wastes. The cable that connects to the waste plug from under the bath deteriorate quickly in hard water areas. My own opinion and experience of these has led me to believe they are more hassle than they are worth. They look good and work great for a while but unfortunately there's lots of cheap inferior types on the market. Steer clear and change for a pop up waste instead. Hope this helps
