Plates on bottom on cast iron fireplace

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.37 PM

Hello, my fireplace is cast iron and tilled from approx 1900 to 1910. I'll try my best to describe this: at the bottom on the columns on the surround, there is a very small plate which sticks out downwards under the surround by about half an inch. So while I've got the fireplace standing on the floor it is tilted backwards ever so slightly because these plates (one under each column) are proping up the front. This has left me confused about how to fit this fireplace on the hearth. If I sit it directly on the hearth there will be a half inch gap at the bottom along the front because of these plates.if I put the fireplace resting on the back hearth only then push the front hearth butting up to the fireplace, and these little plates this hiding them, then it make leveling the fireplace flat to the breast very tricky as the fireplace over time will no long be square but the two piece hearth will be level.. basically it seems like having the hearth parallel with the breast will not ensure the fireplace is parallel with the breast. I can't find any YouTube videos where they address how to do this. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like they are fixing studs, would normally be set in the cement to help stop the fireplace coming forward when the backfilling is put in,
