Builder asking for full payment even though some jobs still not finished..Help Please
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.36 PM
We had a single storey extension built. The build should have taken 4 weeks we are now week 7. We have had a falling out as jobs we asked to be done, werent and my house was left in a mess, there are still a number of smaller jobs that need to be completed. I am worried if we pay the full amount we wont see them again any time soon. They want the payment today, do I give them most of the money and hold some back till the smaller jobs have been finished? Am I ok to do that?? Thanks

If they haven’t finished and it’s not your fault. Don’t pay them.
Reading between the lines I would take a guess you are not totally without fault. It all depends on those jobs you weren’t happy with and the reasoning for them asking for payments.
If you have only expected them to do foreseeable work and haven’t changed anything or caused delays. Then definitely don’t pay them.
Citizens advice would be able to help you.
Any extras added on would be invoiced for separately and wouldn’t affect the original contract sum.

I agree with ELX. I would add that if the smaller jobs are part of the original work not to underestimate the value of them. Usually the last 5% of work takes more time than one might think. Also 4 weeks for an extension sounds a bit short?
