Fitting new skirting board over old wrecked removed skirting

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

We have recently bought our house and will be having the floor put down, we don’t really want beading - so have been toying with the idea of ripping off the old bullet skirting. Underneath the skirting the wall is wrecked - can we fit new bigger skirting into the existing wall - where the wall is still in good condition? We would have around 3-4cm of ‘good’ wall to attach it too Thanks

yes. use gripfill on the bottom of the skirting 50mm up if you can. to help fix it to the wall. pins or screws + gripfill to top of skirt to fix there

depending on depth of the new skirting i myself would tend to run a timber ground (batten) around the wall an inch up from the floor and fix with screws. This will give a good solid seating for the bottom of the skirting and will stop the skirting curling away from the wall. With a 40mm solid fix at the top. Known in the trade as a Belt and Braces job.

I would advise bonding the wall With hardwall or a bonding coat where the plaster/render has come away so that you have something solid for the skirting board to fix to rather than just 40mm and a few blobs of gripfill, make sure you brush the dust away and use a primer on the block/brick prior to bonding. You can use a batten but it depends on the shape and thickness of the wall.

I would remove the skirting and assess which areas have the most damage, a quick way to solve this is to use hardwall. Mix up with water as instructed on the bag and apply to damaged areas. Allow 24 hours for this to settle before fixing new skirting onto the walls
