Can you skim over laughing plaster?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.36 PM
The previous owner has wallpapered the old bedroom ceiling- its old laughing plaster. We recently had a leak from the roof that dripped through the ceiling. Put Roneal damp Seal over it plus a couple of cracks over ceiling under wallpaper cross the ceiling( nothing major by looks if it, just movement) Can you skim over laughing plaster? Do I need a PVA glue painted on so it can stick?

The best result is to find ceiling joists and overboard with plasterboard tape all joints and plaster over to a smooth finish

Hi
I wouldn’t plaster over paper, you have two options either remove the paper then pva and skim or overboard the ceiling and then skim.

You can pva and skim over a lath and plaster ceiling as mentioned above but the cracks will reappear even if the cracks have been tapped over. This is due to the fact that the original plaster would have been lime plaster which expands and contracts with the moisture in the air. With central heating and better insulation now houses don’t breathe and so the lime plaster dries out completely and cracks, and if over skimmed with the movement of joists etc the newly plastered ceiling will crack also. Best to overboard and skim.
This is knowledge known due to being able to do lime plastering work and understanding the materials.
