Hi, when fitting a new carpet & underlay...are grippers required in every room? My partner has been in touch with a fitter who said grippers are not necessary in every room and that we could've used the old grippers rather than buying new ones. My partner has been dealing with all the traders so far but I'm not really sure about this one. My understanding was that grippers should be installed in every room, hallway and staircase. Am I wrong? My partner does not want to argue about it because she says it must be true since he is a professional fitter, but I still have some concerns. Any thoughts? Many thanks.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Depends on the carpet backing and if the old grippers are in good condition and the correct distance from the skirting board in the bedrooms, and the correct spacings on the stairs.
If no grippers are required due to the carpets backing, then an approved adhesive or tape may be used.

Hey, if you purchased same carpet for all rooms and you have used grippers in one , obviously you have to do the same thing at the other one. Grippers are like a base for a carpet, they hold it in place and preventing it from moving. Exception when you glue the carpet down!
Old grippers are usually reusable unless the spikes damage or pretty flat!
If the original grippers are in good condition and the correct distance from the skirting board (approx 10mm) then there is no problem in reusing them. If you are not using underlay under your carpet, then no gripper will be required and the carpet can be stuck down instead. Any damaged gripper or missing can be patched in with new.
If you are planning on having underlay then you will need grippers, felt backed carpets are designed to be glued straight down without the need for underlay therefore no need for grippers, yes you can use the old grippers if they are still in good condition. You can’t have grippers and underlay in one room and not in another, well you can but it’ll be different levels between the rooms and won’t match up in the doorways.
Gripper rods are suppose to be used unless the carpet that purchased is a felt or gelback carpet then it can be stuck down with a suitable adheshive but doing this you must understand you wont get as many years from the product unless fitted with grippers & underlay as carpet stuck straight to the floor will flatten if heavy traffic areas.
