3 core & earth (c.2005) to new/current PIR security light wiring

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

Hi there, I have a garage security light which was wired with 3 core & earth around 2005. It's connected to a PIR security light - via a small, external junction box which I think is part of the unit and forms part of the PIR arm. The light is damaged beyond repair and I'd like to replace it but I need to find out which wires connect to which colours. The current set up is: Garage cable: Black, Grey, Earth (bare copper) and Brown Security light: Red, Blue, Yellow/Green and Brown. I bought a new light which only has three cables (Brown, Blue and Yellow) and think have two possible options. 1) Somebody kindly tells me how I connect the new light to the existing junction box, OR 2) I try and wire it to a free-standing waterproof junction box (example link shown below. The challenges are that Option 1 has 4 wires to 3, and Option 2 only allows for 3 to 3 wire connection so what happens to the bare copper earth? If I'm unable to uncouple the existing junction box I may have no option but to purchase a new one. This feels like it should technically be a pretty straightforward job but is proving to be otherwise so I'd be hugely grateful for a bit of help to these questions. Thank you! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Junction-Outdoor-Cable-Connector/dp/B074QGHXJD/ref=pd_sbs_60_1/262-8824716-9585740?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B074QGHXJD&pd_rd_r=e83a75f6-cb2e-4540-87f5-7ad4116a7d05&pd_rd_w=vIQyY&pd_rd_wg=ayJyT&pf_rd_p=b9bf232d-9a8a-4c7d-aa9d- 641c0995d3a2&pf_rd_r=16691RSPSGB0HACYJ1WK&psc=1&refRID=16691RSPSGB0HACYJ1WK

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

We could tell you how to connect it until the cows come home, but it would just be guesswork-and probably wrong. Just get a spark in, this is such an easy job for a professional

It’s hard to speculate without seeing on this one. Would be worth getting and electrician, wont take more than 10-15min to have look and put a new light up.

It's true. DIY with electrics and most trades is a false economy and makes the job more difficult with all the amateur attempts in the way. Get a tradesman in and let their experience alleviate any concerns you may have.

To be honest you need an electrician who did an apprenticeship and went to college to study. It’s not right that someone who is not competent or qualified should be doing this job, this is how people get injured and fires start! Also trying to save money by doing it yourself could end up costing you more in the long run as it’s easy to make mistakes that then need a professional to fix.
