Do I need a gas meter box?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.16 PM

Hello. About 3 years ago we had home renovation work done and the gas supply was reworked and a new gas meter fitted. The new meter is placed at the front house entrance in the porch. However the meter was not enclosed in any box. There are two pipes running up from the ground that loop into the meter and the meter is fixed to the porch wall via an L shaped metal bracket. I just wanted to check if this installation is standard and ok, or if the thing needs to be enclosed in a complaint box. Or is it ok for me to make a enclosure out of wood. The question came up as a meter reading took place recently and the guy just highlighted that it is normally in a box for safety reasons. Thanks in advance. H

Meter boxes are more for the protection of the meter from rain. If it is in a porch it would be seen as no different from being under the stairs or in a cellar and would be left bare. Boxing should be made of noncombustible materials such as metal or cement board. The meter must be accessible along with any electrical connections to the pipework, a door or hatch would be necessary. Meter readers are not trained in the regulations or installation practices of the work. They are normally minimum wage agency staff who under go the minimum amount of checks. ——— Little extra I forgot to mention. For the natural gas to combust it must be a ratio of 10:1 to 8:1 Air to Gas. Make sure you ventilate any boxing to prevent this ratio occurring in the event of a leak.

Meter boxes should provide half hour fire resistant, so having the correct one is important regardless of their location, it is not for rain or other reasons. As far ventilation, yes should be ventilated which is 1 tenths of the area . Hope this helps
