Wireless light switch an option for wall lights with no switch ???

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.15 PM

Hi, I just brought 3 beautiful wall lights to replace the old wall lights in our new (new to us, but actually old) - the electrician came today to fit them but the old ones had a built in on/off switch on each individual wall light (no main on off switch for them on the wall) and the new ones don’t have a built in on/off switch. - so they couldn’t go up as if he had wired them in they would be ‘permanently on’ - so would be an expensive chasing out of walls job to add a switch wire or buy new wall lights (and these were pricey) - I was looking online and have come across these ‘wireless switches’ on amazon. It reads as if you wire their receiver in and then your switch remotely transmits an on/off signal to it when you press the switch. Would this work for wall lights? Has anyone used these? * update - there is permanent wiring to each wall light ( current ones work just no wired normal on/off just the push button on each individual light) So assuming I can get ones small enough to fit they should work ? Thanks 😊

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I think MK do something like this. If they’re advertised as doing what you describe then why not? There’s a permanent L&N at each light so it sounds viable.. Would they fit within the wall light? They don’t normally have that much room... Regards, Carl.

There are many variations of wireless switches, some good some not so good. Could you provide details of the lights? If they have a big enough hollow within them there are some decent modules that can be fitted directly into them or others that can go under the floors above(if they are drops). To advise on what would be best, is hard without knowing how they are wired in relation to the rest of the circuit and what lights they are. In short, some are good but your electrician would be best to advise you about which ones to use. ——— You can definitely get some that will work. The worst possible outcome is you have to lift a few floorboards.

Have a look at Quinetic switching. Available from TLC.

Quinetic switches are a great new option and are now my preferred option where possible. Switches can be moved or placed anywhere you like and even easily add additional switches. You still need a qualified electrician as the receiver that controls the light needs to be integrated into the circuit that powers the lamp/s. But you don’t need to chase out walls!

As previously mentioned 'Quinetic' from TLC or 'Ener-J' from online. If you're into smart phones, Alexa, google etc then there are Wi-Fi controlled lamps Just Talk or use your phone.......
