Advice on painting this wall please - went very wrong last time, rough plaster/plasterboard?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.15 PM

After stripping wallpaper I've discovered that our walls appear to have a mishmash of rough plaster and plasterboard. I tried painting one of these walls and used 2 coats of primer followed by the paint and the paint started stripping off the wall as I painted. I used pollyfilla at the join to try and smooth the rough edge.. was this the problem? How would you recommend blending the plaster and plasterboard so the joins are less noticeable? Thanks Update: I used sugar soap and scrubbed the wall (took ages), then sanded it, and did two mist coats of approx (50% water to paint (although a very thick paint so wasn't that watery). Had no problem with the second mist coat peeling! Thanks for all the advice.

Did you remove all traces of wallpaper paste prior to painting or filling? 2 options really. Do as above then prepare with filler and sand. Then line with lining paper, wallrock lining paper being the best. Or call in a plasterer

After stripping all the paper off you are left with the paste or size on the wall to thoroughly clean of with warm soapy water ie washing up liquid wait until the wall has dried give a sand with 80 grade sandpaper dust of all the dust with soft broom apply pva 40% water mix wait until dry then fill the joints with easyfill filler lightly usually two fills sand and apply another pva solution 50% water then apply your paint alot of prep but for the best results you can't go wrong

The best thing is to call a professional plasterer. If you don't want after you stripped all the wallpaper do a mix of 50-50% of water and PVA and apply it on the wall then skim with easy filler one coat, sand it. If needs do another coat of skim with filler to be smooth then sand it. Apply another coat of the mix of water and PVA then you can paint. The old paint and the plaster will not peeling back.
