Really before you lay the path you should put a couple inch of crush and run on the area wherever your going to lay your bricks . and walker plate it down so the ground is real firm . Then use Building sand In your mix to lay the bricks with Kind Regards ARPM

Hi there personally I wouldn't put any path down on compact soil , you need to dig out the soil so you have a trench around 4-6"" deep then put a mix of 20to dust 2"thick and compact that down if you trench is 4"deep then on top of that use grit sand and bed the bricks into that so the bricks are level or just below the surface if there is a lawn either side of path so mower can ride over safely to cut the grass .hope this helps Delphinium garden services.

A good rule of thumb for paths is to excavate enough soil in order for you have enough space for at least 75mm compacted type 1 sub base then a compacted layer of sharp sand (20mm max) then your blocks on top to finish. Edging courses should be concreted in place first to ensure all infill laid blocks stay in place. Sweep in dry block paving sand once complete to firm the path up
