Bricklaying & Repointing

How to get into bricklaying

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.15 PM

Hi, I have level 1, 2 and 3 NVQs in brickwork but the problem is I only have college experience. When I finished college in 2009 to go on site I was told on 2 or 3 different sites that they weren't taking on improvers at that moment as there was a recession about that time, (2008/2009). So I fell into a job away from brickwork and have been ever since. I have been thinking recently to make a move back towards bricklaying as I have qualifications not being used. What would be the best way to go about this? I'm guessing going to work on site as a hod carrier as an improver earns less money? Thank you for any advice

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you get on as labourer in a gang, you will load out in the mornings and learn bits in the afternoons. If you’re NVQ lvl3 you can just get a gold card and work as a bricklayer.

Start with a one man band for a year or two, learn a lot of them!! Then when you have the quality then move on to price work site that takes single man bricklayers, make your way up to get the quantity. Best advise is get the quality before quantity bud. Best way to move up and get jobs done correctly

if you can do the work as a brickie ,and want to be a brickie then go as an improver , and go with a large construction company . You will also gain much needed experiance in building modern housing ,blocks of apartments etc etc after a couple of years you can move on and start your own business, you might even be able to subcontract from the large firm you might be working for .it s a decision only you can make its up to you ,, the question is , How bad do you want it , best wishes and good luck.

I would personally go for the labouring as be more money but also explain to who ever you get a start with that you’ll labour with the view of jumping on the line when u get a chance. Will give you some experience and good money

I think your best bet would be seeing if you’re able to do a level 2 course then follow it up by doing a level 3 at college to get your knowledge or bricklaying
