Driveways & Paving

Cheap driveway (large area on a slope)

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi I live in a flat, one of four in a converted house. Basically the back garden was covered over in tarmac (about 10m x 10m) years ago and is starting to crack, it's been kept like this as there is rear access for cars and this is supposed to be for parking - honestly it must have been about 5 years since I last saw a car in there though but obviously it does have to remain useful as a 'car park'. However since our living room window over looks this were trying to make it look nicer, on a budget, bearing in mind the side and that it's on a gentle slope. There is a also a drain hole in the middle. Does any one have any suggestions for the cheapest/most attractive material - I appreciate the two most likely don't go hand in hand. ('car park' currently houses ours & other flat shed, each of our summer outdoor tables, bbq, plants in pots, bench etc to give you a more accurate idea of use - plus a whole lot of weeds growing up through the cracks!)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

ok your best bet would be a standard mono block 200x100x60 and for price you would be looking at between £50 to £60 per m2 + aco channels if needed.

You could try resin bound stone, which I believe starts at around £20 per sq metre. It would be ideal and also would change the appearance from nasty looking worn tarmac. It is basically about 20mm thick when laid and is used with small stone/pebbles bound together with a resin. I would not recommend overlaying the tarmac as it is but tarmac has a base coat and a top coat. I would remove the top coat and lay the resin over the base coat after weed treatment and sealing of any cracks in base tarmac with liquid bitumen. As for the monoblock ( concrete block paving ) the costs quoted above are a bit high as that cost would be to dig out and lay new sub base etc and you do not need a new sub base as it is just the tarmac that is failing due to age.
