Removing boiler and gas supply

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.34 PM

Hello, We're removing our gas supply in our property completely. I've been trying to look at the sequence of events that need to happen to have this done successfully, but I seem to be coming across different information. My understanding is: 1. Gas supplier (British Gas in this case) need to remove the meter. 2. Utility owner (Wales and West) cap the supply of gas. 3. Gas tradesperson can then remove the boiler and main gas pipe. It seems to me that surely a gas tradesperson can successfully cut off our supply at our gas box and therefore remove the boiler and the gas main pipe (which is currently preventing us from demolishing a wall and reconfiguring our kitchen), without the need for the meter to be removed and subsequently the supply capped first. It could takes weeks, if not months, to get BG and W&W out to complete their work so ideally we'd just get someone local and available to do what they can whilst waiting for the suppliers to do their bits so we can crack on with the kitchen renovation this side of Christmas. Any advice?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Rebecca Any registered gas engineer can capped your gas supply inlet to the gas meter by using a capped disc and remove the boiler. If however you want the gas meter or/and gas entry tree (main gas supply before gas meter) remove then you can do this after. You can do other necessary work while waiting for the Tranco to disconnect this which may take upto 3months Hope this help.

you can shut gas off using the ecv (emergency control valve, that is the lever valve on incoming main.)get a gas safe plumber to cap off pipe after meter, then anybody can remove rest of main and appliances.

Hi, all gas installation after meter could be removed and capped by gas safe registered person. The meter itself needs to be removed by gas supplier/distributor.

No issue with gas safe engineer removing everything after meter now to let you carry out work Then supplier can remove meter and cap incoming supply at later date

Hello, it would be best to do it in the order, 3,1,2. Get the Gas Safe domestic engineer to cut off and remove any pipework after the meter you need and only leave a stump at the meter outlet or a sealing disc on the meter outlet. Then it's just a waiting game for the other parties involved.
