loft flooring, stairs, opening up part of roof to double height and roof lights

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.33 PM

We have a 70s bungalow in suffolk which has a large inrenal hallway which is dark. We would like this part to be opened up and rooflights installed to let more light in, while retaining the rest of the loft as storage. It does not have flooring or good access at present. There is some damp issue where the roof joins the wa;; near front door. Which kind of builder is needed? Would I need building survey? The bungalow is L-shaped with traditional pitched roof.

You will need a structural engineer to see if there are any interior alterations that may be required which is then referred to the local council. You need to contact your council to see the best way to proceed. Check on local builders and get 3 quotes for the works. Never give money up front. You may need to inform your insurance company. With regards to builders ask around and see if you can get some recommendations of builders. Good luck

I'd suggest having 2or3 light tunnels in the most appropriate places which no planning or building control is needed. And suggest the lead flashing needs inspection/repairing/replacing

Obviously without seeing your situation I would suggest a light tunnel. There are various shapes and sizes available I personally have one in my integral bathroom No need for engineers just someone who is able to do the roof work and competent diy skills inside
