How to replace a toilet - cistern behind tiles currently

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.33 PM

I need to replace my toilet as it has got a minor leak at the moment as well as the current cistern being too small so that the flush is too weak (it fills and empties properly just too small). Currently the toilet is wall mounted on tiles with the cistern behind the tiles and the flusher on top of this. The tiles therefore jut out about 25cm from the wall with the cistern and pipes behind this and go up about a 1m above the ground so the flusher is just above the top of the toilet. It looks as if the cistern was put in place and the tiles put around it so to replace the cistern alone would I assume mean that all the tiles would need to come off then the cistern replaced. If i wanted to remove the whole thing and just a normal toilet where it is all outside of the tiles what would the order be? Remove tiles, remove toilet, re tile then install new toilet? I also do not know where these tiles came from so I am not sure they can be replaced so if the tiles are removed can they be reused on the wall behind? If the tiles can't be salvaged the walls will need to be plastered and painted I assume but what would this cost for a small patch behind a toilet? Any help is greatly appreciated as this has come out of nowhere and I am stressing out.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes you would generally tile and then install once you had removed the old toilet and tiles. Whether you can reuse the old tiles depends on keeping them whole and cleaning them up. It might be possible depending on how they were mounted. If you aren't going to reuse them and decide to avoid tile altogether, then prep of the wall area, and the cost of it, will depend on a few factors. In particular the area, type of wall and whether it will need boarding or not. I hope this helps.

Hard to re use the old tiles to be honest as they would have been glued down and it requires a magic to remove all of them without damaging. Plus you may need more tiles once the job is done. There may be some expense in the horizon sadly.
