Re sealing grout in bathroom

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.33 PM

Hi there About 4 years ago I had a new bathroom installed upstairs as part of an extension. The room is fully tiled. I’ve been keeping the grout clean using a steam cleaner. Since the completion of the room I’ve not re sealed the tiles or grout. I am reading conflicting info, both that the grout should be re sealed every 6 months! And others that it shouldn’t be sealed at all to enable moisture to escape. I will be renting my house out soon and would like to leave it in the best condition, especially in case the tenants don’t keep up with the grout cleaning (as there is currently no black mould in the room.) Will re sealing help protect against irregular cleaning/maintenance going forward? Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, most grouts these days have anti mould properties included into the formula and don’t need sealing. I like to use a flexible BAL grout or flexible ultra. I’ve never had to seal a grout and I am yet to receive a complaint.

Remove the old grout with a removal tool then re grout and seal, Adding sealant to old grout will make it look rubbish and wont give you the desired affect. Same with silicon !
