Best material for roof terrace with planters & garden furniture
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.33 PM
I have an asphalt roof terrace that was leaking. Got liquid rubber/ acropol on that but leaking within 6 months again. I want to re-roof it properly so it's durable at least for the next c.15 years. What is the best material to go for, considering there are planters, garden furniture and I walk on it barefoot. Please advice.

Rubber roofing without a doubt.
You could top it with rubber playmats but this will be expensive.
Remove existing and Re board and fix rubber (can be cut to exact size).
Manufacturers guarantee for 30-40 years.

I’d use GRP fibreglass but your need to use heavy duty matting and slate granular finish if your walking on it and putting stuff on top of it, CURE IT the leading manufacturer of GRP give a manufacturer guaranteed of 20 years and GRP has a life span of 50 years.
They build boats out of this stuff it’s best suited to this application where the roof is going to be constantly wet.
It’s the only true seamless application in my option.
EPDM rubber comes with 20 year manufacturers guarantee life expectancy of 50 years but they don’t guarantee the glues used to stick it down and seal the joins which says a lot about the product.
Also the rubber is fairly thin at less then 2mm thick for there standard and less then 4mm thick for the premium stuff I’d worry if your walking on it and putting stuff on top it would get punctured easily.
I’d also consider building a “floating deck” over the flat roof terrace if your budget allows for this, as this will greatly benefit the roof as nothing will be adding stress by being on top of it restricting movement of materials etc.
Hope this helps,
Regards
Frankie

Flat roof products aimed at the householder, are not really designed to take footfall and furniture, The best system I have used is; lay a double thickness of deck board, for extra stability, then fit an EPDM Rubber roofing system. On top of that I would lay rubber promenade tiles to protect the EPDM although this system is quite expensive, but it will give you many years of service. Ensure your roof structure can carry the extra weight.

Personally i wouldnt board it over the asphalt roof because it can alter the falls i would keep the existing asphalt roof and put a high tensile torch on felt over it and then a play mat over the top especially if its a used balcony tel
