Can I fit joinery before or after fitting new carpets?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.33 PM
I am working on a property where new bespoke joinery will be fitted. However, I am always in doubt about what comes first and after. The electrics need to be done (patching and plastering), then joinery (with spray painting); then decorating, then new carpets. But my worry is that it might not be good to be cutting the carpet to fit it around the unit. What's the best solution - before the joinery structure is fitted or after joinery and decorating? Thanks

Hi, It's always the clients choice, depending on their programme etc, but we prefer to be the last trade after the carpet fitters. The carpet then covers all the floor, given good acoustic and draught barrier. Also if you ever remove the furniture, you don't then need to re-carpet the whole room as you would if its carpeted after.
Hope that helps.

Carpets get installed after all joinery works are completed and all other trades have finished. Joinery need to be fixed directly to the sub floor to reduce movement.
Also Joinery is classed as permanent fix and carpets get replaced quite regular.
Please people don’t give bad advise.

Normally best to fit carpet last when all painting etc is completed. If there is a need to fit before end you would need to cover carpet well so it won’t be damaged. You can put in units etc on top of flooring, the problem comes when you need to replace it in the future.

You better go further with all your working steps, and keep the last paint layer ( surface) at the very end after all electrical, floor Covering and skirting boards.

Doors normally are the most promatic for a floor layer . A good business will check the clearance of each door , prior to install. The other carpet fitters may offer to trim the door . But we would advise a Professional Carpenter to do this for you as you wouldn't expect a carpenter to fit the carpet.

Depends what the client wants. I would always advise to have it on top of carpet so if they want to remove it they can without there being a gap in the carpet. You can paint and fix so not worries about damaging the carpet with paint.

Carpets last, prevents paint getting on carpet.joiner replacing carpet tracks wrong. But always best to have a sample of flooring for the joiner.

I’d advice do all joiner work then carpets last, as you want won’t want paint, mud etc all over them.

Hi I would personally fit all carpets last after the joinery has been fitted , this will benefit how solid the joinery will be as if you fit on top of carpet there will always be a bit of movement above
