Is my wall strong enough to hang a heavy punching bag?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.54 PM
Hi, I'm in the middle of turning my garage into a home gym and was looking to hang a punching bag on one of the walls, attached to a wall bracket. My worry is that the load will be too heavy and I could end up doing some damage to the wall. Can anybody offer some advice on what kind of things I should be doing to assess whether the wall will be suitable? Or would I be better off hanging it from the ceiling?

Masonry walls are usually bonded and therefore designed to fail (safely), Rhythmic Tension caused by swinging & impacts of a hanging load will put undue stress on the masonry wall and could cause the mortar joints to fail. I would advise you to increase the strength of your chosen joist by increasing its size. A good example is that of a girder truss (three timber joist bolted together in a zig zag pattern) if necessary employ a pier or piers to underpin the joist/girder truss if the span of the joist is undermined by the weight or if the joists bearing is insufficient Then suspend the bag from the ceiling joist by fixing a steel plate with a hanging loop to the girder truss.

If it is a block wall you can hang it using coach bolts

Best hanging it from the ceiling if possible,, if u want to put it on ur wall, u have to find where the studs are (framing wood) that's the only way it will stay up,,, hope this answer helps.
