Ex-council Maisonette flat Open Plan fire safety without gas.

Anonymous user 11 October 2020 - 9.59 AM

Hi. I live in ex-council maisonette flat and I am concerned about my open plan kitchen project. Particularly related to fire safety regulations requirement to separate the kitchen. Question: If I stop using gas and use only electricity for everything, would it make any difference for fire safety requirements? I am trying to have a fully open plan without any separation glass, curtains, sprinkler.

Hello, I understand that you could use local fire suppression system in open plan kitchen and dining spaces, such as mist which is similar to sprinklers but require a much smaller amount of water and could be incorporated into he cupboard. Regarding use of gas, the only advantage is that you won't need to install a ventilated cupboard for the boiler and gas detection. However, it depends on the internal plan layout of your property, because of the exit routes in event of the fire - meaning, that if the resident needs to exit through the kitchen to the exterior, it might be a problem, considering that kitchen is the most likely to be the location of fire.
