Economy 7 overnight heater - wall socket getting very hot
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.54 PM
I have a water heater with an overnight heater switch. This was replaced last year with a new switch and element for the tank as both were very old. The overnight kicked in perfectly for a few months then stopped working. I had noticed the new socket with switch on the wall was too hot and have since noticed scorch marks around it! I have removed the fuse (which is available on the front of the switch and have obviously switched off and not used it. I wondered why this has happened and what Th current replacement would be. Many thanks in advance.

If it’s on a 13 amp Spur unit, this should be changed to a 20 amp DP switch, but it has to be on a dedicated supply not off the ring etc. This needs to checked out by an electrician, as I suspect you may have issues with loose connections also.

Immersion elements aren’t meant to be 13 A fused, a 20 A DP switch would normally be the correct form of isolation. You did a great thing by removing the fuse. I think you’ll find that you will have a burnt out neutral behind your switch, caused by a loose connection.
Have an electrician attend and rectify.

Carl.

Almost certain to be a loose connection in the switch. When it was replaced the terminals weren't tightened enough.
