Shower isolator pull cord switch

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.54 PM

Can you fit a shower isolator pull cord switch within a shower cubicle? If not, what is minimum distance you can?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes, if the body of the switch is located out of any zones, and is suitably IP rated for its installed location... but I wouldn’t personally. Have an electrician measure up and advise. Regards, Carl.

Switches are now allowed in bathrooms as long as outside all zones (zones 0,1,2). Zones extend to 0.6mtrs from edge of bath/shower. If working to these regs, it has to be noted that RCD protection would also be required. But a lot of electricians still prefer to fit outside the room.

No ! It needs to be at least 600mm from the edge of the shower. If you don't know you shouldn't be doing it. Also it needs to be notified.

If the ceiling is 2.25m high or more, then it is outside zone 1 and you could fit isolator there (in theory). Not a good idea in my opinion due to increased steam/splashes/etc - you would need IP67 or similar rated pull cord isolator switch, and best to my knowledge those don't exist.

The simple answer is ‘ Maybe’ You cannot fit a shower pull cord in Zone 1 of a bathroom. The shower cubicle is Zone 1. Under building regulations part P zone 1 extends to a specific height. As long as your ceiling is above this height you can fit your pull cord above the shower cubicle. Search Building Regulations Part P bathroom Zone 1 and check the height. I want you to search yourself so you know you are following the law. Measure your ceiling height and you will know if you are able to place this pull cord above this outside of Zone 1 Good luck
