Carport conversion - linked to next door

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.54 PM

I have tried finding an answer but struggling. So my house is semi detached and the way my house is connected to next door is with a vacant space/carport which is mine, with my bedroom built above that space. I want to knock through to the empty space from my living room and then convert the space into a living room by putting up two walls with windows to enclose the carport. Is this possible without planning permission?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I’m afraid you need both: planning permission and the whole process supervised in accordance with current building regulations. Only up to 12 meters square extension or shed is permitted without any bureaucratic procedures involved. Hope it helps ...

Yes you wouldn’t need planning but would need building control as footings would be needed !!

First of all when making enquires about your work I would submit some pictures so that we can get more of an idea of the required work. I am not understanding the part where you say your bedroom is above the canopy ? Is this like a empty garage space. If you build out and at the rear then you may be blocking off light 💡 to you neighbours property which is not a good idea. It may be different if this was a conservatory but as for a brick 🧱 wall then I think you would require plans draw up and then submitted to your local council plus you may need a structural engineer and then the council would enforce all work through their DS who will pass all the works and he is the one who looks after your works and to see you don’t get any cowboys builders in. Make your your builder meets with all regulations and make sure your DS sees the works progress. Your best bet is to either phone up the council to check your requests for ongoing works or you could chat with a structural engineer to get their view with a potential of them getting the work to do your drawings. I would also check your possible works with your neighbours as the last thing you need is a war. Don’t forget to also inform your mortgage company and also your insurance company of the proposed works. Hope this helps.

Hi my advice would be to contact building control as they can advise you free of charge what you’re position would be. Hopefully you should be exempt from planning and if you’re advised to go through planning it’s better for you to do that as when if you are ever are going to sell It’s all legal. Hope that this answer is satisfactory Kind Regards SSB
