Repair mortar in house brickwork
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.54 PM
My house was built in 1980s and the mortar is missing or broken in various places. I have been quoted 10000 to remove and replace motor. Also 2000 to spray on an invisible solution which stops water penetration. It has also been suggested that rough casting would be a solution. Can you advise? How do you know if repointing should be undertaken?

I think they are scaming you with the invisable solution. I would just stick to getting the repointing done. Should do the job. But i think your quote is very high

the only reason people render newish brickwork is to cover up problems ... so do not render repoint ,buy a tin of ronseal waterproofer for £20 .. there enough in the tin to do the whole house .. remember bricks have feelings too!

I would advise a site visit to assess the extent of the repointing work. It may be some remedial work in places to make the job cheaper than a whole re point. The site visit would also allow me to establish the type of mortar to use based on existing mortar/ brick type.
