Does an outdoor socket have to be routed through the fuse box?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.54 PM
I would like an outdoor socket installed but I am just wondering about what is possible. I want it to go right by the electric meter, which is in a box outside, would the job have to involve running wires inside to the fuse box and back out again, or can it be directly to the outside electricity with some other form of isolation? Obviously I'm looking for safe and legal, and have no intention of doing this myself!

It is usually quite straightforward to add an outside socket. The simplest way is to take a spur off one of the sockets and drill a hole through the wall to the outside.

It would be simpler to have a spur from an internal circuit or to pull a new circuit in from the Consumer Unit.
To have an external Consumer Unit supplied via the meter would add an element of risk for both the install as ‘live working’ would most likely be necessary and the use as it would be subject to weather and other stresses.
It would end up being quite expensive.

The easiest way to do it would be to put a fused spur inside your house supplied off of a local socket then drill a hole out tgrough tge back of your fused spur and fit your new socket outside supplied off this. Only to be done by a trained and competent person though.

As mention best and most straight forward way would be to open the nearest socket, drill a hole out fit a IP rated 13amp fuse spur and then onto your new IP rated socket
