Depth of sub-base for storing motorhomes

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.36 PM

I own two 3.5T motorhomes and want to get an area of tarmac covered hardstanding made to store them on, but am being given conflicting advice about how much sub-base is required to ensure it doesn't sink under their weight... One contractor has said 6" is enough and that the compaction is more important than the depth of hardcore. Another has said that I need at least 300mm of hardcode. What is the correct depth? Is a fabric sheet required underneath it all? What layers should be applied? Thanks for any advice Helen

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You want at least 800mil ov type 1..make sure you use a roller to compact it. Then I would say probley 100mil of ten mil base tarmac.. Then 50 mil topping which I would do at 25 mil.. But I would leave it a few days be for pulling it on....

Hi, the depth of material will depend on the quality of the ground where you are putting this hard standing. You have to dig off the top soil and sub soil until you get down to good ground ie harder ground. This is your foundation for your material if this isn’t achieved then it doesn’t matter how much stone you put on the top it will still sink. Once you have your good ground you can make the ground back up with 6F2 which is a crushed material and is more economical for you, use this if the depths are greater than expected. Ensure that each layer of material is compacted at 300mm levels. Once you have made the level up you then need a clean stone with fines present to allow for good compaction. Then base layer of tarmac is required this is your preference for depth I wouldn’t use any less than 65mm but the more you use the more expensive it gets. Then a topping coat of tarmac to finish it off. The sheeting that you mention, I wouldn’t say you would need that for a hard standing. You will get different opinions on depths and materials but the key to your job is Start on Good hard ground! Hope this helps.

I wouldn’t recommend tarmac as it heat up in summer and will subside

Normally you would have 150 mil subbasbit with extra wait no harm in going 300 ml sub base
