Mot type 1 limestone spongey while laying and compacting in heavy rain
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.36 PM
Hi all on Saturday i had 8 tonnes of limestone type 1 mot delivered for sub base of my new drive, i spread and compacted 3 m2 but then it started to get too waterlogged and spongey when tampering, i spread the rest and covered with tarp, how long with it take to dry out to continue with the compaction process? Cheers Greg

Hi Greg,
Few factors here, mainly on how well the ground underneath is draining, if you are laying on clay then you may well appreciate this could take longer, i would also ensure you allow for a deeper sub base when clay is present, this could be the issue here.
A day or so of dry sunny weather at this time of year(early October) should allow you to work with it again.

Hi Greg.
In my experience of digging a drive out a drive with clay I usually dig out a bit deeper and membrane under the MOT as well as the top that will stop it being spongy.

It seems to me that you haven't dug deep enough before putting the mot in,it shouldn't be spongy, even with all the rain we've had lately,

Hello Greg.
This will all depend on the depth of in which you dug down and how well the ground underneath is draining , me personally if it gets too spongey then I’d allow a day or two for it to dry out as whatever you then put on top will move if it is too wet.
