Installing bath screen on thin tiled wall

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

I want to install a shower screen above my bath to stop water escaping when showering. The wall it would attach to has been tiled but it feels very thin. This section above the bath is away from the actual wall to give the pipes and cables somewhere to go. I don’t know what the tiles have actually been tiled to. It is sturdy but I’m concerned the weight of a shower screen would be too much for it as I have no experience with it. Are sturdy tiles enough to hold a shower screen even if the wall is thin? Edit to answer questions: It would be a long flat screen, there is plenty of space so don’t need one that opens. We use a shower curtain at the moment but water still gets out. I could look into getting a better or thicker shower curtain but was hoping a screen would be possible.

What screen? Sounds like you need a shower curtain or a fixed screen that doesn’t open.

I’m afraid that if pipe work and cable are surface mounted then you won’t be able to fix back a shower screen to wall, also if wall is thin then the wall will have to be made more sturdy as shower screens can be heavy and require a good sturdy fixture to wall.

Most shower screens have a metal channel that you fix to the wall with plugs and screws, then the screen fits into it. My advice would be before fixing the channel run a bead of clear silicone to the back of it. Then leave it for 24 hours before attaching the screen. if you do this you'd be able to swing on it. its possible there could be plasterboard and timber behind the tiles if its a stud wall to hide the pipes, you'll find out when you drill the holes for the channel

A short fixed screen, 30 cm wide , fixed to the tiles would put no strain on the wall , so could be glued with silicone,in conjunction with a shower curtain it would solve the problem of water escaping in the corner.

As long as the wall is tiled correctly I. E. No loose tiles then it would definitely hold a shower screen. Just make sure you use the correct size plugs for the holes you make. I normally put a line of silicone behind the metal fixing plate to help with stability.
