Gap between concrete and ply over old floorboards, kitchen

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

Hi, our new kitchen has been fitted and we want to lay Quickstep laminate for flooring, however ripping out old lino revealed concrete floor that has crumbled at edge down middle of floor where its meant to meet old floorboards which have previously been covered with ply, this has left a messy gap. Also further along where ply meets ply there is a difference in level of a couple mm. Fitter reckoned pour leveller on to gap/hole and job done, and that we can then put down underlay and laminate, but gap is upto an inch wide, and poking a stick down I've found some bits are a good 4 inches deep. Length of the hole along the gap is about 4 inches too, and there is a very slight difference of about a mm in level between concrete and the ply too. Any advice and thoughts welcome. As kitchen has already been put in I don't think boarding out whole room is an option anymore? Thanks in advance

where the concrete floor is damaged use some repair mortar, Ardex do a couple that will take foot traffic after a couple of hours such as Ardex TRM. Then if needed the whole floor could be latex screened to tidy/level prior to underlay and laminate being installed.

Hi, remove any further loose concrete. Use a gunable foam filler- like expanding foam, allow to dry and cut back. Latex over the area to bring to the new Level you require ( heights between the concrete and timber) When walking on the newly fitted laminate, the weight will be spread across the length of the boards and you’ll have no problem with remedied area. Getting a flat floor ready for the new floor to go down is essential for longevity of the new flooring. Good luck

Personally if you want a smooth floor ratjer than level, and cheapest option,, I would fill the larger gaps with Ardurapid and then smooth off other discrepancies with feather edge if they were that bad, a mm is nothing to worry about. If you want a level floor then fill the larger gaps with Ardurapid and then poor a latex levelling compound over the whole area
