Length of rawlbolt to fix studwork base plate to concrete base

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

I'm building a garden cabin and have my 4 walls built and ready to fix together and bolt to the concrete base. The timber is 4x2 and I've read that rawlbolts are a good solution to fix the base of the frames down to the concrete. I've bought these but am unsure if these will be sufficient length: https://www.screwfix.com/p/rawlplug-rawlbolts-m10-x-115mm-5-pack/87759 Also, am I ok to drill a 16mm hole directly through the timber with a masonry bit then into the concrete at the required shield depth? I don't want to have to move the frames to drill the concrete then move the frames back etc.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, The rawlbolts should say on the box the limits of the sizes you have bought. They sounds a little small for the application, I would of gone for a M12x 150mm length. The key with the bolts is the correct hole sizes and a clear hole. The masonry bit will get through the timber, but its more via force than drilling. Won't be a very neat hole. It is better to pilot through the timber to mark the slab, then remove the timber and masonry drill the slab. Its worth taking the time to do it properly, as it will be a whole load of issues later if the bolts are not strong enough or the holes are poorly drilled. The alternative to rawl bolts, that you may find easier, Are resin anchors. These are similar, but give you an excellent chemical bond and they allow greater tolerance when setting up. The resin can be used with simple threaded rod, washers and nuts, which is cheaper than specialist bolts. Drill, Resin, Rod, Fix. Screwfix sell it. Good luck

Hi I would use m12 by 120mm self tapping concrete bolts With square washers depending on how thick and how good the concrete is
