Plastic pipe fittings used near boiler

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

My gas engineer has declared my boiler unsafe because plastic pipe fittings were used to join copper pipes within a meter of the boiler. The pipes in question are not those supplying gas. Does this count as a breach of regulations, or is it just not an ideal setup? I've read that some boilers with a high limit cut out thermostat and a pump overrun do not come with this recommendation - not sure if my boiler falls into this category, it's an Ideal HE30.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there thanks for the question regulation state that pipe work has to be a least a meter away it’s not recommended to have plastic pipes to the boiler as it’s the joints I.e the seals are likely to leak and it’s not goods practice to use plastic all tho it’s allowed as long as it a 1 meter away there no regulation to say you can’t use plastic pipe Or fittings sum boiler manufacturers don’t recommend it and may void the warranty put down poor installation it’s should be oki proved I’d that’s it more than a meter a way hope that helps your boiler should only been turned off if it unsafe Not really for that reason hope that helps thanks Stuart

No this does not. Plastic water pipes are in common use for heating primaries and water supplies. Probably not what a professional plumber would use, but there is no such regulation. Was the engineer Gas Safe Registered !!! I should check the documentation that was left and check at https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/ Here you can check if the engineer is registered to work on gas Best Wishes Brandon

The reason for not using plastic pipe so close to the boiler is because the fittings for the plastic Pipes may get to hot and leak

Manufactures (M.I) should always be followed. Boiler manufacturers of gas boilers state that plastic pipes should not be installed within 1meter of the appliance. A professional gas safe registered heating engineer would know this and therefore, not have left an installation in contravention of the M.I.
