Support taken from stairs to attached newel post to, how to fix?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.35 PM
When previous people have replaced the stair bannister and handrail, etc. they have completely taken out the newel post and base and the bottom, but left the base of the post in at the top. Where they have done this they seem to have lost all support on the stairs and we are now struggling to attach a new newel post, and there's nothing to attach it to which can then give it more support. What are ways around this to be able to put some support behind the new post?

You could half lap joint the new post to the existing post which would add extra strength alternatively bore out the centre of the existing post and the new newel post can be purchased with a rod like end that sits down into the bore and is fixed that way.

You could have a stud wall and maybe a door and cupboard space ,or just have a new post fitted below the one that’s been left

A site visit would be needed as your question is vague and has more questions than answers

Moistest and tenon joint would be the best way of giving good stability to newel posts and this would be done by making sure you split the old newel post down the centre, saving the tenon on the stairs.
