180v at light fittings
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.35 PM
Hi, downstairs lights are not working and checked voltage at each light fitting with a voltage tester and only getting 180v between live/neutral but getting 240v between live/earth. This is the same at each light on the circuit. Can anybody suggest a possible reason for this before I call out an electrician? Thanks

Hi
Sounds like a neutral has come loose somewhere
My advice would be to get an experienced sparky in to help find the fault.

Sounds like you have a high resistance on the neutral.
The voltage between live and earth is only present because you connected between them with the tester, the fact it’s at 240V shows that there is no serious problems with the live or the earth in terms of resistance. It should have tripped the breaker when you did it though.
You should have it checked over and rectified by a well experienced spark.
When it come to fault finding nothing is better than experience.
Edit,
I did wonder the same as Carl about the equipment being fused and insulated properly and all the other requirements of GS38, might be worth reading the guidance note on it. As he says also you can find it by testing from fitting to fitting, provided your leads are long enough and meet GS38 requirements.
You should be doing this with a low resistance ohmmeter and the power turned off.
Would still advice an experienced electrician though they will find it in minutes.

Hello,
You have a high resistance fault with the neutral. You’ll need an electrician to find it for you. You could check for voltage at each light fitting between L & N, you may stumble across a light fitting with normal voltage, and this is where your loose connection could be.
Is the measuring device you’re using GS38 compliant?
Be careful, and good luck.
Carl.

It does sound like you have lost the neutral you should get an electrician to investigate
