Electrical

Certificate for fuse box and other wiring

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Hi we had new fuse box put in last year ,its nearly whole year now and the electrician was highly recommended and I got him from mybuilder. He promised us a certificate and also advised against hiring anyone who wasn't qualified to give one and the importance of certificate. Well we still have not been given it and over the year I've messaged him loads of times and phoned him and he has said hed come round but hasn't. Is there anything I can do which will make him have to give our certificate or am I waiting my time. Wouldn't mind but we treated him well as all tradesmen, My wife keeps constant tea coffee going she always goes out and gets fresh bread ham cheese cakes biscuits etc lemonade coke anything she can think of that they might like I feel more sorry for her she makes everyone welcome always worrying they might be hungry or thirsty. So it's not as if there is any reason why he wont give our certificate no disputes and left happy with payment before he even left just incase he needed the money .So what can we do ,we don't really want to start down solicitors route as he seemed a nice guy

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, Sorry that you’re having this negative experience. Was he part of a governing body? NICEIC, NAPIT, STROMA etc..? One would suspect he is if you got him from here. I would contact his governing body and log a complaint, that would be the first place I would start. As well as the electrical installation certificate, he was supposed to issue yourself with a Part P certificate, within 28 days!! I wonder how he got MyBuilder membership? I wonder if he lost his accreditation due to poor workmanship? Seems very odd that he didn’t provide you with all the necessary certification?? It’s not a difficult task to undertake.. Look up his profile, assuming he is still registered with MyBuilder, and see who he is registered with, and take note of the registration number. Then call them with those details to hand, and explain your situation. They will be able to advise on what to do from that point onwards. Good luck, Carl.

Legally speaking it was your responsibility to ensure the compliance and certification happened. He however might have promised to do it for a fee. You would be entitled to claim that fee back. In terms of compliance though, your installation should not be connected to live power until it has been properly tested and certified. You would be liable in the eyes of a building control body. They would prosecute you and expect you to claim against him. The best thing to do is get it tested and certified by someone else ASAP and claim the costs from the him in small claims court. Probably report him to trading standards too. Would definitely be worth contacting mybuilder they may have an impartial channel for mediation and dispute resolution, if you aren’t covered by their new insurance.

unfortunately this is all to common we find in are trades, do you know this electrician is registered with a trade body? NICEIC, NAPIT? if so you could contact the scheme provider and they may be able to help. this is why i won't take a customers payment until i give them the certificate as that is when the job is completed

Firstly was he registered with a governing body scheme such as the NIC EIC? you can contact them and they will contact the electrician on your behalf . He has not done the job he said he has after several attempts at contacting him it may be worth trying the small claims court .
