Duct hole next to doorway

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Hi, I am looking to install an extractor fan (150mm) in my kitchen. The only space for this is next to the back door (right next to it), will I cause structural issues with the door lintel by cutting such a large hole in the wall under where the lintel is supported? Many thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

To be honest it's not the best place to install a vent, any external lintel should have 150mm bearing and if you were lower than the bearing to take such a size away from the reveal would be structurally detrimental. Can you not go up into the ceiling and form a boxing and run it between the joists to the outside?? Hope this helps

Impossible to say without more details. Doesn’t sound promising though.

In principle the first answer is correct as you would never introduce a soft object like a duct under a structural lintel .The other negative aspect to this scenario is that by placing any extract duct close to a door or window is that with a slight breeze the extracted fumes will get blown back into the building which is not only unpleasant it also doesn't comply to building regulations.
