3 phase supply splitting?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.15 PM
I have purchased a property that is in 3 separate homes/dwellings. It was a former care home and has a 3 phase electrical supply. Can this be split so each property has its own electric meter so each can have their own bill? All the current electric comes in above ground on traditional electric poles. Edit i own the whole property I will have one dwelling my son and daughter will have one each also. But want to have separate bills etc.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I agree with Carl, but I think the utility company would only send 1 bill for the 3 phase supply and the meters become your own property and you take the readings and bill the tenants accordingly.
Alternatively, get Western Power to put 3 separate meters in

Hi there,
Yes you can supply each property with its own phase from the 3 phase supply, via its own single phase meter.
Please do get yourself an electrician to advise further, and good luck with the project.
If you want separate billing, contact DNO.
Regards,
Carl.

Hi yes it is possible at the 3 phase supply you would need an isolation point(switch fuse) for each dwelling, from there you will have your cable run to each dwelling to another isolation point, Then you would have your single phase meter installed and from there your consumer unit feeding the property
Thanks Dan

This would be a job for the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) or the chosen Energy provider.
Unless you intend on buying the electricity yourself then metering it and charging a fee. Which is very common in the HMO and student rental market.
An electrician would be able to advise with more detail after an inspection.
