Patio Flags with Gravel

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.15 PM

Hi. I am planning to extend my concrete block patio slightly 1m by 6m. I have already dug to a depth of 200mm where I will place 100mm of compacted MOT Type 1 then place the 40mm flag ontop of a mortar base to hold them in place . The way the flags will sit means they will have a gap in between them rather than paving/jointing the whole area. Then placing decorative gravel in beween the gaps or joints of approx 50mm at the depth to the MOT. My concern is weathering will slowly degrade the fines within the MOT and all my hard work gone to waste. What is the best way to achive this effect (abit like stepping stones with gravel) and protecting the MOT base at the same time ? I would very much appreciate any advice and help. Thank you in advance. Regards Jaz

If you have mortar bed over the top and create a sloped bunding on the edging it will be fine. I personally would just lay ground control sheet onto the mot, place the flags then pour gravel.

I always lay slabs with a gap between there are two ways to fill the gap I use a grand which is a fine granit party dust and sone sharp sand so the ratio is 2 sharp sand 1 grano 1 ordinary Portland cement this needs to be gauged every mix to make sore the jointing drys out the same colour or you can buy a ready mixed jointing compound it’s dry you sweep it in you have to constantly pack the joints push it in with a trowel or jointing iron then use a soft brush to finish the joint off it’s no good doing a cheap job the frost will blow it outfit
