English bond - building one brick thick wall using imperial sized bricks 220 ×110 ×70 mm

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.14 PM

Hi everybody, I would like to find out how a one brick thick wall can be built using bricks sized 220 ×110 ×70 mm using English bond without forming straight joints. What would be the ideal size of a queen closer for this size of brick? N. B: I do not have access to metric sized bricks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

English bond is made up of alternative coursing as in stretchers one course headers in the next English garden wall is slightly different where as you have three stretcher courses then a header, if you start with a stretcher, stretcher on the first course then on the second you would start with a header, closure the closure being half the size of the header then your off header header and so on

For English bond on a 4 inch wall you will have to either start with a 3/4 length brick on the stretcher course continuing with all stretchers, followed by all headers on the next course repeating alternately (which will all have to be snapped headers.at the end you may have to end with a full brick on the streater course you would end with a header + closer on the header course continuing with all headers, followed by all stretchers on the next course repeating alternately . You could or probably should build it in English Garden Wall bond, where you would only have to lay the snapped headers every third course. keeping all the brickwerk quarter bond. I hope this helps.

Building in English bond the queen closer should be a quarter of the length of the stretcher, and start header, closer header, and on the coarse above start with a stretcher

Cut the header face of the brick (110mm) in half 55mm this will provide the required bond. So the first course should be all laid as stretchers (220mm) followed by the second course which should start with a header, followed by a queen closer (55mm) then commence the course using headers, finishing the course the same way you started ie queen closure and header. Alternate courses as described
