Roofing

change of roof from tile to slate

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.14 PM

I have 6 roofs (12 sides) with tile each weighing approx 1kg each. Can I replace with slate each weighing approx 2kg each. Will the roof take the double weight and do I have to ask for permission. Many thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Lee, the timber structure will hold the weight of the tiles even if they are a little bit heavier then the old ones also the weight distributes evenly. If it's a conservation area you may need permission best to contact your local authority. https://www.gov.uk/apply-work-home-conservation-area

Slates in the main, are much lighter than tiles so it would not be a problem. If they are heavier (I've not come across a 2kg slate in 40+ years of roofing) the rafters may need upgrading, very unlikely though.
