How to install window trim for bay window with protruding parts of concrete poles.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.14 PM

Hi Everyone, I would like to ask what is a proper way to install trims for bay window with protruding parts of concrete poles. 1) Should the installer install window trim in 1 piece from top to bottom. 2) or can the installer can cut into multiple pieces because it difficult to fit around the protruding parts of the concrete structure. Please see the photos. https://photos.app.goo.gl/QMaqZYdFXiqHmdPx9 Some parts of the window have smaller gaps and the window installers said that he cant fit the trim into the gap, so he just applied silicon. The problem is that the window will not look uniform if some parts have trims and some parts dont have trim. Our neighbours have trims from top to bottom and it looks complete in all 3 areas of the bay window. But I think these trims were put at the time the windows were screwed to the frame. If you do it after installing the window to the frame, you will not have much chance to squeeze them in. This comes to my last question as when to install the trims? 3a) At the time, you put silicon around the window 3b) or at the time, you screw the windows to the building frame. Thank you so much for your help

It seems the parts you are referring to are actually call add-ons / frame extensions , these are common to use on bay windows especially on older houses . The add-on are usually fixed prior to installing the window with silicone between the window frame and the add-on . Yes it can be cut to fit between extruded areas BUT it’s good practice and a neater job to then scribe a trim in one continuous piece to get a good finish and make it waterproof. It seems the main issue here is not the installation itself but the finishing off Which is basically not complete. Hope this helps

I agree the finishing is not good or even complete should be sealed trimmed and sealed to give better finish the parts were the concrete is protruding/patterned can be trimmed up to bottom sealed then trimmed from top of protruding part to top of fame it is not very good finish and not in my opinion finished ...are you sure they not coming back to finish I cant imagine it been left like that as finished product

Absolutely shocking ! Example of window fitting. Should have been on 150 cills not stub cills. Which could have been scribed around the stonework . frames should have been brought forward to minimise the gaps and then finished off with a small silicone bead. Bad survey and bad installation.
