Measure from where on rear of building

I have a 1930's terrace property. At the rear there is an original small kitchen extension and 2 storey bay windows; the rear living room and bedroom above. My query is where do I measure from for the 3m permitted development? Can I follow the profile of the small extension and bay windows or is it only from the main wall?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi,
when measuring from planning, the planners will always consider the projection of any extension from the main 'unextended' face of the building - this is applicable to all front, rear and side elevation.
